: I actually own one of Shirley Jump's books *shame* I bought it on impulse because it was $4 and I thought I wanted a girly, gushy read. The Marine's Kiss. I think the title should have warned me. It was awful, awful, awful. It's about 100 pages long and I skipped about half of them and had no problems following the "plot". It was cliched and predictable and the main characters were sooooo 2D it wasn't funny. She needs to employ the "show, don't bash the reader over the head" rule. I want my $4 back!

: Anyway. Why is a decent romance so hard to find? Something with good writing, I mean. Good writing makes up for so much, imho. I want something nicely written, with likeable characters (or at least interesting and well developed characters), a bucketload of angst and a happy (but not overly predictable) ending. Is that too much to ask for?

some of the romances are better than others... but "better" is sort of subjective. None of them are really all that great.

For that, you need to find books that aren't called romances, but just happen to have a lot of romance. Diana Gabaldon comes to mind *lol*
