ENGL 436 Literary/Film Themes: The Idea of Fellowship in Literature (3) ( ) ( ) (UWR)
This course is an in-depth study of a major theme in one or more genres, historical periods, or authors. We will engage in a playful but serious study of the nature of friendship and fellowship in a wide spectrum of contexts, focusing upon gender relations, race relations, and both the grim and comic nature of friends and allies in the criminal world. The course’s primary goal is to provide insight into the way that people seek out and shape relationships with others. Course texts are Elmore Leonard’s Tishomingo Blues and Rebecca Wells’ Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood. Films studies are Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas and Ridley Scott’s Thelma and Louise.
