The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

Review by Alleandra

I finished Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass. This is a fantasy book (the first of a series) for YA.

The book is well written, with some interesting characters. The heroine, Lyra, is especially engaging, as is her daemon. Pantalaimon. (To all chatters...I did not use this handle recently, as some seem to think..*l*) Anyway, their adventures are many, and some are quite frightening.

There are several pretty dark elements in this book...it is more scary then the dangers that Harry Potter and his friends face, for example.

All in all, this was a very good book. *sigh* Yet another unfinished series. Book 2 is out, and book 3 is scheduled for a 2000 release.

The one unsatisfying part was the abruptness of the end. In the Harry Potter books, the conclusion is complete, and the reader happy. In this book, the endng is very open, and the reader wants to find out immediately what happens next. Luckily, we can, because book 2 is already published, but if he concludes all his books in a similar fashion, it will be a frustrating wait until the next installment.
