The Year of the Griffin by Diana Wynne Jones

Review by Caleyna

Technically the sequel to The Dark Lord of Derkholm, this YA novel really has nothing to do with the events of TDLoD. It is set in the same world, but it centers around Elda, the daughter of the "Dark Lord".

The World

There is not a specific name for the world, but it is basically a magical place with wizards, dwarves, green people, and air spirits. There is a moon, and Mars also exists, but basically it is your typical magical world.

The Characters
Elda, the griffin daughter of Derk, has finally flown the coop. This book focuses on her and her six good friends, Olga the mysterious, Felim (hunted by assassins), Lukin the Prince, Ruskin the Dwarf, and Claudia the half-breed. We also meet some truly horrofic tutors, namely Wermachent (sp) and Corokon. Several characters from Dark Lord of Derkholm also make cameos, including Blade, Kit, Callette, and Querdida.

The Plot
This is a very Harry Potter like book. The plot is simple: Elda goes to Wizard University and has all sorts of adventures, including assassins, goverment overthrows, and a trip to the moon. We can't forget the rouge griffins or a wedding for one of Elda's sisters either. And how about pirate ships and the book of truth? Lots of fun, campy adventure.

The Grade
Even though the plot reminded me of Harry Potter it is really NOT a Harry Potter rip off. Jones is quite orginal and tackles fantasy stereotypes with panache. I really enjoyd this book, even more than I enjoyed the orginal Dark Lord of Derkholm. I woudl recomend this to anyone who likes a fast paced fun read. 4.2 out of 5 amulets.
